Blackhead breakout: What's a blackhead?


Blackheads are small black (papula) bumps on the skin surface. Blackheads are a mild type of acne that generally appears on the face.

Besides on the face, blackheads can also appear on the neck, chest, shoulders, back and arms.

Blackheads are divided into several types, namely:
  1. Blackheads. Information about the symptoms and causes of blackheads will be discussed on this page.
  2. Whiteheads, is a type of blackheads which hair follicles was clogged completely.
  3. Micro blackheads, is a very small blackheads or invisible blackheads.
  4. Macro blackheads, is a whiteheads with a diameter of 2-3 mm.
  5. Gigantic blackheads, is a type of cyst with a black open end on it.
  6. Solar blackheads, is often found in areas of cheek and chin in the elderly, and sunlight exposure is suspected to be the cause.

Blackhead bumps that are very small and black on the surface of the skin will be easily visible directly.

Because there is no inflammation, blackheads is not hurt. Blackheads may become inflamed if it pricked or scratched.

Each hair follicle consists of a hair and oil glands (sebum) that serves to keep skin smooth.

Blackheads are caused by dead skin cells and oils that accumulated on the outer end of the skin follicles.

Because the skin above the blackheads is exposed by air, blackheads color becomes black.

There are several factors that can trigger the growth of blackheads, including:

  1. Increasing the number of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria on the skin surface.
  2. Hair follicle irritation that causes dead skin cells does not fall off regularly.
  3. Hormonal changes that cause increased oil production, especially during adolescence and during menstruation.
  4. Skin that is too dry before menstruation due to the use of skin moisturizer or in the humid weather.
  5. Using products with certain chemicals, including pomade (a kind of hair gel for men) were greasy and some hair dye.
  6. Certain foods can cause blackheads, such as dairy products and foods with a high glycemic index (sugar and fat).
  7. Hair follicles that fall out due to injury, for example due to squeezing pimples, side effects chemical peels (skin cleansing techniques by peeling using a chemical solution), or side effects of laser treatment.
